Katrina Anniversary Underscores Importance of Protecting Your Home and Family

It’s been five years since Hurricane Katrina came roaring into the Gulf Coast, dramatically changing New Orleans and the lives of those who called it home. While there is very little homeowners can do when facing a natural disaster of that magnitude, the anniversary – and the current threat from Hurricane Danielle – is an important reminder that with a little planning and preparation, homeowners can better protect their home and family from a disaster.

The experts at HouseLogic – a free, comprehensive consumer website about all aspects of homeownership – say that with research and a little work homeowners can quickly develop a plan that will help them reduce losses and recover faster following a natural disaster.

“Families build their futures through homeownership, and HouseLogic should be a homeowner’s first stop when it comes to increasing, maintaining, and protecting the value of his or her home,” said NAR President Vicki Cox Golder, owner of Vicki L. Cox & A

In 2007, about 55 percent of car crashes in Arizona which lead to death were due to drivers that have swayed from the roadway. Also, accidents in the intersection make up 22 percent of deadly car accidents in the state. Large trucks were involved in 11 percent of these accidents.

Falling consumer credit card debt: Are we learning a lesson?

This week’s news brings interesting implications for consumer finances. First we learned that existing home prices have slumped to record lows, which has the media buzzing about the “new role” of owning a home. The new role is that our homes no longer function as limitless ATM machines. No more buying electronics, recreational vehicles, jewelry, and designer wardrobes with home equity loans and lines of credit. Under these circumstances, it appears that consumers would again turn to credit cards for the instant gratification of discretionary purchases. No way. Americans may finally be getting the message about the high cost and consequences of carrying high credit card debt.

Maybe you don’t need to… perhaps you are already experiencing the ills that our great country is facing.

Is it really about a democratic or republican’s individual parties view and opinion? Could it possibly be collective, yet poor choices of decisions from both parties? Is either one perfect? Obviously not, or we would not be in this frightening mess that so many hardworking Americans are now facing.

Maybe it is the human ego that is getting in the way. Why we bicker our way to the third world, maybe we should take a pause and ask ourselves… is it worth it? I am not
