Chris Huhne to discuss Big Six monopoly on energy market

Chris Huhne to discuss Big Six monopoly on energy market Energy Secretary Chris Huhne is meeting with green energy companies to discuss how to tackle the monopoly the Big Six have over the energy market.

Ecotricity, Good Energy, First Utility, Ovo Energy, Utilita, Co-op Energy, as well as regulator Ofgem, will all meet with Mr Huhne today (Thursday July 7th) to discuss how the government can boost competition in the energy market.Mr Huhne hopes that more competition will help bring energy bills down for consumers, calling it “madness” that 99% of energy is supplied by the Big Six – British Gas, E.ON, EDF Energy, nPower, Scottish and Southern Energy and ScottishPower.”Our energy market has been too cosy for too long,” he said. He added that he wanted the “small guys” to have an equal chance in the energy market.”I’ve told my officials to knuckle down with Ofgem and make reforms so consumers can have more choice and better deals for their gas and electricity.”Ofgem recently announced it will investigate suggestions that there is a big difference between the prices the Big Six companies are paying for their energy supplies.
