Huhne: Energy price increases are very unwelcome
Huhne: Energy price increases are very unwelcome Energy Secretary Chris Huhne has called the recent rises in energy prices “very unwelcome” in light of other financial pressures faced by households.
Mr Huhne has said that the government is working to help people through “these hard times”.”[This help includes] the introduction of the Warm Home Discount to help tackle fuel poverty, clearer billing information to help consumers find out if they are getting the best deal and switch tariff if they are not, and energy efficiency measures such as loft and cavity wall insulation to cut waste and keep bills down.”We are also working to boost competition in the energy market by reducing barriers to new entrants,” Mr Huhne said. His comments come after Scottish and Southern Energy became the latest energy provider to raise its electricity and gas prices, by 11% and 18% respectively. The general response to these price hikes has been dismay, as Mike O’Connor, Chief Executive of Consumer Focus, said that the increase will tip “many thousands” more people into fuel poverty.Figures from uSwitch showed recently that 6.3 million homes are in fuel poverty, using more than 10% of their income to pay energy bills.
