Confessions of a Bridesmaid: The $1,000 Reason I’m Not Looking Forward to Wedding Season…

The Dress $250

With a hefty price tag, my dusty rose chiffon bridesmaid dress (that I’ve been told I’ll want to wear again and again) was an excruciating process to order considering it had to be done six months in advance. Thankfully, the bridal store let me put a down payment on the dress and transformed my big purchase into smaller payments. It’s a considerably less painful way to pay for a dress that I’ll be wearing for all of 6 hours. Now I won’t feel so guilty when this dress is immediately introduced to the back of my closet the day after.

The Bachelorette Party $625

While I’m all for celebrating a woman’s last night of freedom before getting married, I’m not sure I needed to go all the way to the land of overpriced drinks and never- ending jokes from the Hangover. One night in Las Vegas cost me nearly $625 between airfare, hotel, food, and drinks ($10 beer, anyone?). Give me quality time with good friends over the bright lights of the strip any day! And no, 10 girls in Vegas does not constitute a wolf pack—just a lot of short dresses and uncomfortable shoes.

The Presents $100

The presents add up when you factor in the bachelorette party, bridal shower, and of course, the main event. Instead of spending a good chunk of my hard-earned money on a $250 bread maker or matching his and her ice cream scoops, I decided to make my friend her bridal shower present. By giving her a hand-made gift, I saved money and gave her something that I know she’ll cherish. But I’ll confess that I am going to spring for a gourmet waffle iron as a wedding present, because honestly, who doesn’t love waffles?

Bottom Line:I have begrudgingly given my opinions on champagne flutes and flowers for the past nine months and spent more money on someone else’s big day then I did on my first car (sad, but true). But If I had it to do all over again, I wouldn’t change a thing. I planned ahead and saved where I could. Plus, at the end of the day, paying $1,000 to witness one of my oldest and dearest friends marry the man of her dreams will be worth every penny.

What’s the most you’ve ever spent on someone else’s wedding? We’d love to hear from you!
