What is the Value of Sports in Our Lives?

It has been demonstrated repeatedly that sports can offer incredible benefits, but it is also true that there can be a dark side to sports. Is there a proper balance and if so, what is it?

Millions of people have been thoroughly entertained and energized with the games that have occurred in the sports world over the past several weeks. The Bowl games have been viewed by huge numbers of people and have been the topics of conversation at many a water cooler. Lifes’ lessons have been displayed on the field and on the television screen as we watch some teams perform brilliantly and achieve success while others make costly mistakes that result in failure. What is the difference? In a loss, is it an entire team that comes up short or the limitations and poor performance of one or more individual players? Is it the superior performance of the entire unit or the incredible play of a few individuals that result in a victory?

How much of our own personal success in life depends entirely upon our own performance and how much by the circumstances we find ourselves in and the company we keep? Probably, it is a combination of the above stated factors and more. Certainly, our own efforts have to be considerable for many reasons.

In the game of life, we need to give it all we have. We need to participate fully. We need to engage other in the process. There is a lot we can learn from sports in this endeavor.

We witness the triumph of a team when they come out victorious and also from the solo athlete who rises to the top in his sport. Isn’t life made up of both kinds of experiences? Aren’t their there times when we succeed or fail as a group an d those when the winning and losing is individual and personal?

While the participation in sports can sometimes result in injury and defeat, it can also provide some of the highest moments imaginable. One thing is for sure, it does provide an arena where one can perform,learn, improve, experience and grow. Isn’t that what life is all about?
